Gold karat measures gold content on a 24-part scale. Ten-karat gold is 10 parts gold out of 24, 14K is 14 parts, 18K is 18 parts, and 24K is nominally pure gold. The corresponding proportions are about 41.7 percent, 58.3 percent, 75 percent, and nearly 100 percent.

This comparison helps you read purity claims and compare how much fine gold two items contain. It does not rank craftsmanship, authenticity, durability, or beauty.

How the 24-part karat calculation works

Divide the karat number by 24 and multiply by 100. For 18K, the calculation is 18 ÷ 24 × 100, which equals 75 percent. For 14K, it is about 58.3 percent. The balance consists of other material in the metal mixture.

Do not confuse karat with carat. Karat, abbreviated K or sometimes kt, describes gold purity. Carat, abbreviated ct, is a unit of gemstone weight. A listing for an “18K ring with a 1 ct diamond” uses both terms for different facts.

Millesimal fineness expresses the same type of proportion in parts per thousand. For example, 750 represents 750 parts gold per thousand, or 75 percent. Legal standards, permitted tolerances, and accepted marks vary by jurisdiction, so mathematical equivalents are not automatically approved hallmark forms everywhere.

The table gives arithmetic relationships, not a universal stamp chart. Marks commonly round or follow a legal standard. A 14K object may carry 14K or a millesimal mark recognized in its market; UK hallmarking guidance, for example, lists official fineness standards within its own statutory system.

How to read a purity mark in context

Record the whole group of marks, not just the largest number. A quality or fineness mark may sit beside a maker, sponsor, assay-office, or responsibility mark. Those companion marks help identify who stands behind the claim and which system should be used to interpret it.

FTC consumer guidance tells U.S. shoppers to look near a gold karat mark for the name or registered trademark of the company responsible for it. UK hallmarking uses a different structure for covered articles, including compulsory sponsor, fineness, and assay-office components. Neither system should be imposed on an item from the other without evidence.

Words describing construction matter too. FTC guidance distinguishes karat-gold items from gold plate, gold filled, rolled gold plate, and vermeil. A surface layer can carry a stated karat while the core is another metal. “Solid gold” addresses whether an item is hollow in the cited U.S. consumer guidance; it is not another way to say 24K.

Compare fine-gold content by metal weight

If two unmounted items have the same metal weight, the higher-karat one contains more fine gold. Multiply the metal weight by the purity fraction:

  • 10 grams of 10K metal contains about 4.17 grams of gold.
  • 10 grams of 14K metal contains about 5.83 grams of gold.
  • 10 grams of 18K metal contains 7.5 grams of gold.
  • 10 grams of nominal 24K metal approaches 10 grams of gold, subject to the actual fineness standard.

Gross jewelry weight is not always metal weight. Stones, enamel, springs, non-gold findings, fill material, and dirt can be included on the scale. Hollow objects also use less metal than similarly sized solid ones. Do not estimate fine-gold content from the total weight until those components and the construction are understood.

Fine-gold content is not the same as retail price or resale proceeds. Labor, design, brand, condition, stones, taxes, seller services, and the market and date of sale can dominate the final number. Use live prices only with a verified metal weight and fineness, and do not apply one fixed resale percentage.

What each purity may suit

10K provides the lowest gold proportion in this four-way comparison. It may fit a buyer who prioritizes a lower gold input cost or a market where 10K is a recognized standard. Confirm the local marking rules and the actual construction.

14K contains a majority of gold by weight and is common in many U.S. consumer-jewelry categories. It is often considered when price and gold content both matter. Judge the specific links, prongs, clasp, thickness, and finish rather than relying on the number alone.

18K contains three-quarters gold. Buyers may prefer it for higher fine-gold content or its appearance in a chosen product. Compare total metal weight and workmanship before assuming that every 18K item should cost a fixed amount more than a 14K alternative.

24K is the high-purity choice in this comparison. FTC guidance notes that pure gold is soft, so design and intended wear deserve attention. High-purity jewelry can be practical when its form and use account for the material; the label is not a warning that it cannot be worn.

Color and service needs come from more than purity. For the separate question of copper, silver, nickel-based and palladium-based mixtures, white-gold coatings, fabrication, and repair, read which metals are mixed with gold.

What karat cannot tell you

A karat number does not prove that a stamp is genuine. It does not name the maker, age, country, manufacturing method, condition, or value. It also does not tell you whether every clasp, post, solder joint, or replacement part has the same fineness.

Appearance cannot settle the question. Lighting, polish, surface wear, plating, and neighboring stones change perceived color. A magnet may detect a strongly magnetic component, but it cannot confirm a gold standard. Professional testing should identify the method, sampling location, surface preparation, and limitations.

A practical purity-comparison checklist

  1. Transcribe the complete mark and photograph its location.
  2. Identify the likely jurisdiction and applicable standard.
  3. Separate the main body from findings, repairs, and surface layers.
  4. Confirm the metal-only weight if calculating fine-gold content.
  5. Compare current prices using the same weight, construction, and sale context.
  6. Inspect workmanship and condition independently of karat.
  7. Request suitable testing when the financial stakes justify it.

Choose among 10K, 14K, 18K, and 24K by deciding how much gold content you want, which marking framework applies, and whether the actual object fits its intended use.
